Baby A’s Easter Dress

Baby A’s Easter Dress

I made the Little Lizard King's Monet for Baby A's first Easter dress because the shape closely resembles my new Essex Dress. I absolutely love how it turned out; she on the other hand could deal with less ruffles so close to her face. Ha!

This dress was a fairly simple sew and the cotton was a breeze to work with. I changed the top sleeve ruffle layer slightly by adding a seam in the middle to compensate for the directional print. Top stitching the ruffle sleeves down was a bit bulky and didn't look as crisp as I usually prefer although I don't notice that once Baby's in the dress.

I made a "hand stitch" boarder on the front bodice piece with my new Pfaff Expression 710. I was able to taper the stitch to 30 degrees at the corners and really like the delicate detail of the tone-on-tone stitches.

Three glass buttons up the back finish the dress and don't detract from the fabric or compete with the pattern details. However, the back placket on the skirt is my least favorite part of the dress. I found it hard to make the placket lay flat without a pucker at the bottom pivot point. Thankfully the skirt is gathered and hides this little imperfection.

Pattern: Little Lizard King Monet
Size: 12m
Time: Estimated 3-5 hours (who can tell with the interruptions of sewing around nap time?!)

Cost to Make:
pattern - $9.50
fabric - $16.00 (purchased on discount)
buttons and thread from my stash
TOTAL: $25.50

Lavender Heirloom Dress

Lavender Heirloom Dress

When I saw this beautiful lavender floral fabric I knew I had to make something for my daughter with it.

Lavender is my mother’s favorite flower and it always reminds me of her, so I chose to make a pattern her mother, my maternal grandmother, made for me when I was a baby. This Butterick pattern was printed the year I was born and my grandmother made view D for me. I made view B for my daughter and although they look fairly different from the front I found myself referring to my grandmother’s make a few times to clarify the pattern’s instructions. Grandma has been gone for a number of years now, but I love that, in a way, I was still able to share this make with her.

This fabric was gifted to me in return for a post and this post contains affiliate links. I love baby's new dress and can't wait to get her in it! Thank you for your support.

Sunflower Fields - Auntie and Me

Sunflower Fields - Auntie and Me

I recently had the honor and privilege of working with designer Crystal Whitlow on her newest autumn collection, Sunflower Fields. Crystal has so many fun designs for children that I immediately thought of an "auntie and me" mini collection. I'm a sucker for a good floral print and loved the idea of scaling her sunflower designs for different sizes.

I've made the McCall's 7542 twice before, once in an embroidered denim fabric and once in a blue and white shirting, and know I love it. However, I wasn't a fan of the neck facing and the bell sleeves were difficult to hem, so I decided to try my hand at using bias binding in it's place. I was fortunate to find a similar top pattern for little girls, McCall's 7799, and topped off our coordinating outfits with bow tie for him McCall's 7223.

I ordered four different kinds of fabric printed on cotton poplin to create these looks - 2 yards of Large Sunflowers (red) for my top, 1 yard of Sunflowers and Fauna (red) for her top, 1 yard of Elf Red Speckles for our sleeve and bias binding, and 1 yard of Sunflower Stripes for his bow tie. The fabric was a dream to work with, I love how the bell sleeves hold their structure, and each pattern came together quickly. However, I did find cotton poplin bias binding hard to work with and would choose a lighter weight fabric for bias binding in the future.

Tip: I watched Lauren Guthrie's "The Ultimate Guide to Bias Binding" parts 1 and 2, a few times, to learn everything I needed to know about bias binding to successfully install my binding. Thank you for making and sharing these resources Lauren!

As you can see, we had a ton of fun taking pictures together and I love how the final garments turned out. I would certainly make them all again!

Cost to Make:
patterns - $5
fabric - $74 value
thread - $5
TOTAL: $84 value

Time estimate to make all three garments: 10 hours

This post was a paid partnership. Crystal was a joy to work with and I would order her fabric again.

Baby and Me Matching Outfits

Baby and Me Matching Outfits

Aren't miniature clothes cuter than full size clothes? I recently made a matching baby and me outfit for my favorite one year old and her dollie out of leftover material from the leggings I recently made and other scraps I had stored in my stash.

This was a quick, fun project. But hemming those tiny little leggings was difficult!

Thankfully I had enough leftover material to make a few matching Coral & Co. knot bow headbands. I just love how they turned out! Check out Coral & Co. for the free knot bow headband pattern.
